A licensed N.D. must meet the standard undergraduate pre-med curriculum requirements before attending an accredited four graduate medical institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Licensed N.D.s must also pass a series of rigorous professional basic science and clinical national and state board exams. Currently, NDs are licensed in 13 states and the District of Columbia. The New York Association of Naturopathic Physicians (www.nyanp.org ) is currently working on legislation to create licensure in NY. Because naturopathic medicine is not yet licensed or regulated in New York, Dr. Finkle works under her acupuncture license and technically can not practice medicine. Instead, she offers recommendations and counseling. It is important, therefore, that patients remain under the care of their physician.
